How To Make Bows

Unread post by patriceinil » Mon Mar 27, 2017 3:59 pm

Farmfresh asked me to do a tutorial on bow making so here you go.

I start with a 3 yd spool of wired edge ribbon and some floral wire.

First I cut 2 lengths of ribbon for the center loop and the streamers (tails).

For the center loop I cut a piece about 8-9" long and for the streamers I cut a piece about 14-15" long.

Then I cut a piece of floral wire about 12" long. The rest of the ribbon on the spool will be used for the loops of the bow.

I start by making a circle with the short piece of ribbon, overlapping the edges an inch on each side. Then I pinch the center of the bottom of the circle together and fasten it together with the piece of floral wire.

Next I fold the other piece that I cut in half and set both of these aside.

I then take the ribbon on the spool and make a loop about 12-14" wide making sure that the cut end has about an inch overlap from the center. I continue to wind the ribbon around the loop that I made (making sure that I have the same number of loops to pull out on each side when I'm done) until I used up the rest of the ribbon on the spool.

Then I fold the entire thing in half evenly and pinch the wires in the center.

Then I unfold the ribbon and pinch/gather the ribbon in the center.

I then take the center loop that is on the wire and fasten it to the pinched loops. Make sure the side of the ribbon with the cut end is facing away from the loop. Twist the wire tightly to secure the loops making sure to catch the cut end of the ribbon in the wire.

Then take the streamers (tails) piece, pinch it in the center and attach it to the rest of the bow making sure the print side is facing the center loop of the bow.

Give the wire a few extra twists to make sure everything is secure and start pulling your loops out and fluff your bow.

I find it easier to pull the inner loops to the bottom of the bow, by the streamers and the outer loops to the top.

I usually try to get three loops per side on my bows to get a nice full bow.

Perfect! I have never tried starting with the three different pieces before. I am going to give this step by step a try and see if I can do it too. Thanks so much. I am so tired of what I have been passing for bows all these years.

Kid's birthday is coming up. Maybe he can have a nice bow on his gift this year. |em23|

You're welcome

You can also cut a piece of cardboard to wrap the ribbon around to make the large loops if you have trouble getting the ribbon to even lengths.
