Solar Electric Water Heater

Unread post by Biggkidd » Sat Feb 29, 2020 7:50 am

Trying to build a set it and forget it off grid water heater. In the past I've built both a rocket stove water heater and a direct solar water heater. Off grid hot water is a big PITA! Both of the water heaters I've built did work pretty well, to well in some ways. But they also required a lot of tending to and or TIME. As I get older I want more stuff that works without me having to supply continual labor, wood etc.. So now I'm going for solar electric.

I started by wiring a similar unit to this https://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-Water-Heate ... 4902.l9144 element in our existing 50 gallon hot water heater. I'll be testing it out with our current solar when the sun comes out. I'll probably hook it to it's own dedicated panels though. It does NOT have to go through a charge controller or inverter. Any of you who have used such already know the less power you pull through the CC or inverter the longer they last.

Interesting fact it takes roughly 2.5 watts for one hour to heat 1 gallon of water 1 degree. So this is going to take some power! But it'll be money well spent IF it works out as a set it and forget system as planned.

More as it happens...

Great information BK! I'm on it...

I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and NOT have it!

Took about 10 hours to get truly hot water. 5 yesterday and 5 today. But we have 50 gallons of hot water. Still haven't made up my mind just how I'm going to hook it up permanently. Know I need to order one of those thermostats ASAP.

I was down all day today. Tick got me between the toes and foot is swollen to where it won't take pressure. That has everything on hold for the moment.

More as I figure it out.

How long will it stay hot if you don’t use very much?

A few days has been my experience. We've been using this 50 gallon hot water heater as a hot water holding tank for years now. I know with the wood fired boiler hooked to it 3 to 4 days so I expect the same here. That even allows for showers dishes etc..

A tick bite?! Already? Hope it is all better by now.

Sounds like a great hot water setup. Hope you can give us updates over time!

Thanks guys. Tick bite is still getting worse it seems. This one is making me sick as any ever have maybe worse.

Only had to run the heater 3 hours today to get to a satisfactory temperature.

GO DIRECTLY to the doctor!!

My husband came very close to dying several years back from a tick bite. He was hospitalized and off of work for nearly a month! His white blood count got so low they called in a Leukemia specialist. Hopefully you saved the tick as well. You should ALWAYS save the tick. Just stick them between a couple pieces of clear tape and label the date you removed them. The doctors can then go back and culture the tick and find out RAPIDLY which of the thousand different tick borne diseases that particular tick was carrying.
Matthew 19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
